Benefits of ACF

Activated carbon fiber (ACF) has unique features that set it apart from conventional granular activated carbon.
In this section, you will learn why ACF offers superior performance and how it compares to granular activated carbon.

WHAT is ACF?
~About activated carbon fiber (ACF)~

What is activated carbon?

Activated carbon is a carbon material with many tiny pores (micropores) that removes organic compounds from liquids and gases by a process known as adsorption.
The pores made by an activation process widen the internal surface area of the activated carbon and attract molecules to the surface by weak forces known as Van der Waals forces.

Which raw materials and what types of Activated Carbon exist?

Activated carbon is mainly made from wood, coconut shell and coal, and it can be made into granular, powdered, pelletized and fibrous form.
UNITIKA carbon filters use fibrous activated carbon as the key material.

What are the differences between activated carbon fiber and other forms of it?

The adsorption behavior of activated carbon is significantly affected by the pore structure and distribution, which depend on the starting materials, activation process and the shapes.
Micropores with diameters less than 2 nm, contribute to the adsorption. Activated carbon fiber shows faster adsorption speed as it has a larger number of micropores on its surface. Therefore, it achieves much better kinetic adsorption performance.

Adsorbates can be adsorbed without diffusive transfer due to micropores on the surface, which achieves faster adsorption.

Multi-step diffusive transfer is necessary due to micropores inside macropores.
